Skip to My Lou was a popular partner stealing song from America’s frontier period.  Couples danced around a single guy who would sing “Lost my partner, what’ll I do?” Then the couples would sing “I’ll find another one prettier than you,” and the guy would “steal” a new partner from a dancing guy. The dancing guy would then take his place in the middle of the circle.
