It Is Well With My Soul is a beautiful and moving hymn written by Horatio Spafford with music composed by Philip Bliss. Its first publication was in 1876 and frequently appears in hymnals around the world.
Spafford wrote the song after enduring a series of trials in his life including the death of his 2-year-old son, financial and property loss due to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and the economic slump of 1873, and finally the death of his 4 daughters who were on board the SS Ville du Havre when it collided with another sea vessel as it was crossing the Atlantic on its way to Europe. He wrote it as the ship he took to meet with his wife passed by the spot where the Ville du Havre had sunk claiming his daughters’ lives. It is a religious hymn and a solemn prayer that talks about how one’s faith can remain unshakeable despite whatever happens in life.
