Do Your Ears Hang Low?” is a kids song that is popular in elementary schools, kids camps, and birthday parties. The melody is based on American folk song, Turkey in the Straw, but can also be sung to Sailor’s Hornpipe. Several ideas exist concerning the origin of the lyrics, but no theory can be confirmed. It is possible that is it a wartime song that found it’s way into popular culture as a children’s song.

Lyrics for ‘Do Your Ears Hang Low?’

Here is one of several variations on the lyrics for this song.

Do your ears hang low?
Do they wobble to and fro?
Can you tie ’em in a knot?
Can you tie ’em in a bow?
Can you throw ’em o’er your shoulder
Like a continental soldier?
Do your ears hang low?

Do your ears stand high?
Do they reach up to the sky?
Do they droop when they are wet?
Do they stiffen when they’re dry?
Can you wave them at your neighbor
With an element of flavor?
Do your ears stand high?

Do your ears flip-flop?
Can you use them as a mop?
Are they stringy at the bottom?
Are they curly at the top?
Can you use them for a swatter?
Can you use them for a blotter?
Do your ears flip-flop?

Do your ears stick out?
Can you waggle them about?
Can you flap them up and down
As you fly around the town?
Can you shut them up for sure
When you hear an awful bore?
Do your ears stick out?

Do your ears give snacks?
Are they all filled up with wax?
Do you eat it in the morning
Do you eat it in the bath?
Do you eat it with a scone
Or do you eat it on its own?
Do your ears give snacks?

Senor Don Gato | Lyrics, Video and Piano Sheet Music

Here’s a wacky kids song from Spain. Senor Don Gato is about a cat who finds true love, but gets so excited that he falls off the roof on which he was sitting. Fortunately, his funeral passed by the market square, and the scent of fish was so strong that it brought Senor Don Gato back to life.

Lyrics for Senor Don Gato

Oh Senor Don Gato was a cat.
On a high red roof Don Gato sat.
He went there to read a letter,
Meow, meow, meow,
Where the reading light was better,
Meow, meow, meow,
‘Twas a love note for Don Gato.

I adore you wrote the lady cat,
Who was fluffy, white and nice and fat.
There was not a sweeter kitty,
Meow, meow, meow,
In the country or the city,
Meow, meow, meow,
And she said she’d wed Don Gato.

Oh, Don Gato jumped so happily,
He fell off the roof and broke his knee.
Broke his ribs and all his whiskers,
Meow, meow, meow,
And his little solar plexus,
Meow, meow, meow,
Ay Caramba cried Don Gato.

Then the doctors all came on the run,
Just to see if something could be done.
And they held a consultation,
Meow, meow, meow,
About how to save their patient,
Meow, meow, meow,
How to save Senor Don Gato.

But in spite of everything they tried,
Poor Senor Don Gato up and died.
And it wasn’t very merry,
Meow, meow, meow,
Going to the cemetery,
Meow, meow, meow,
For the ending of Don Gato.

When the funeral passed the market square,
Such a smell of fish was in the air.
Though his burial was slated,
Meow, meow, meow,
He became reanimated,
Meow, meow, meow,
He came back to life, Don Gato.

Lyrics for ‘Cindy’

I wish I were an apple
A-hanging on the tree
And every time that Cindy passed
She’d take a bite o’ me

Chorus:
Get along home, Cindy Cindy
Get along home, Cindy Cindy
Get along home, Cindy Cindy
I’ll marry you some day.

You ought to see my Cindy
She lives away down south
She’s so sweet the honeybees
Swarm around her mouth.
(Chorus)

She told me that she loved me
She called me Sugarplum
She drew her arms around me
I thought my time had come
(Chorus)

She loves me in the summertime
She loves me in the fall
If she don’t love me all the time
I want no love at all.
(Chorus)

The first time that I saw her
She was standin’ in the door,
Her shoes and stockings in her hand,
Her feet all over the floor.
(Chorus)

My Cindy is a pretty girl
My Cindy is a peach;
She throws her arms around my neck
And hangs on like a leech.
(Chorus)

Lyrics for ‘Short’nin’ Bread’

Put on the skillet,
Slip on the lid,
Mama’s gonna make
A little short’nin’ bread.
That ain’t all
She’s gonna do,
Mama’s gonna make
A little coffee, too.

Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’ bread,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’ bread.

Three little children,
Lyin’ in bed
Two were sick
And the other ‘most dead
Sent for the doctor
And the doctor said,
“Give those children some
Short’nin’ bread.”

Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’ bread,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’ bread.

Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’ bread,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’ bread.

When those children,
Sick in bed,
Heard that talk
About short’nin’ bread,
Popped up well
To dance and sing,
Skipped around and cut
The pigeon wing.

Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’ bread,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’ bread.

Slip to the kitchen,
Slip up the led,
Filled my pockets full of
Short’nin’ bread;
Stole the skillet,
Stole the led,
Stole the gal makin’
Short’nin’ bread.

Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’ bread,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’ bread.

Caught me with the skillet,
Caught me with the led,
Caught me with the gal makin’
Short’nin’ bread;
Paid six dollars for the skillet,
Six dollars for the led,
Spent six months in jail eatin’
Short’nin’ bread.

Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’ bread,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’, short’nin’,
Mama’s little baby loves
Short’nin’ bread.

Yellow bird,
Up high in banana tree,
Yellow bird,
You sit all alone like me

Did your lady frien’,
Leave de nest again?
Dat is very sad,
Make me feel so bad,
You can fly away,
In the sky away,
You’re more lucky dan me.
