Coventry Carol | Free Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords, Video

The Coventry Carol is also often called the Lullay Song. It originated in the 16th century from a popular town in England called Coventry (hence the name). Around that time, it was commonly part of the tradition to perform the song in a mystery play called The Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors.

Although it has been widely known for several centuries as a Christmas song which is usually played during the holidays, the song itself depicts an entirely different story. In The Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors, a scene describes an event in the Bible regarding the experience of families during a difficult time and the song is sung by mothers as a lullaby to comfort their children.

The original author of the carol is unknown. As in the old days, this was only passed on orally and not written down. It wasn’t until Robert Croo had done so in a manuscript many years later that a written copy came into existence. Ever since then, it continued to be played in pageants or plays and the lyrics were gradually modernized. It was eventually brought to a wider audience after the song was featured in the BBC’s Empire Broadcast during Christmas in 1940.

Johannes Brahms (May 7, 1833 –April 3, 1897), composer and pianist, was one of the leading musicians of the Romantic period. Born in Hamburg, Brahms spent much of his professional life in Vienna, Austria, where he was a leader of the musical scene. In his lifetime, Brahms’s popularity and influence were considerable; following a comment by the nineteenth century conductor Hans von Bülow, he is sometimes grouped with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven as one of the Three B’s.
