Beriozka (The Birch Tree) | Lyrics, Piano Sheet Music & Video

Beriozka or The Birch Tree, is a classic traditional Russian Folksong, which is believed to have been written two centuries ago. Commonly known as “In The Field Stood A Birch Tree” in English, this song has many variations on its name, including “Berezka”, “Beroza” or “Beriozka.” It is quite popular among composers and personalities, who have incorporated it in their works. Tchaikovsky included Beriozka in the last movement of his Fourth Symphony, while Dario Mariannelli used the song in his musical score for the film, “Anna Karenina.”

Lyrics for ‘Beriozka’

See the lovely birch in the meadow,
Curly leaves all dancing when the wind blows.
Loo-lee-loo, when the wind blows,
Loo-lee-loo, when the wind blows.

Oh, my little tree, I need branches,
For the silver flutes I need branches.
Loo-lee-loo, three branches,
Loo-lee-loo, three branches.

From another birch I will make now,
I will make a tingling balalaika.
Loo-lee-loo, balalaika,
Loo-lee-loo, balalaika.

When I play my new balalaika,
I will think of you, my lovely birch tree.
Loo-lee-loo, lovely birch tree,
Loo-lee-loo, lovely birch tree.

Fum, Fum, Fum (Christmas Song) | Piano Sheet Music & Guitar Chords

Fum, Fum, Fum was originally a Catalan/Catalonian Christmas Carol written sometime between 1501-1700. The rhythm is based on a courtly dance called the Sardana which came from the Provence and Catalonia area.

The literal translation of the word “fum” means “smoke” which could refer to the rising smoke from chimneys. However, the word has a range of other meanings and uses. It is also sometimes used to mean “to play the fiddle”. Some say the title could just be an onomatopoeic imitation of the strum of a guitar, the sound of a drum, or the noise of a rocking cradle.

The song was converted (though not translated word for word) into the English language in 1953 by Robert Shaw and Alice Parker. This became the popular version of the song in most English-speaking countries, especially in the US.

Lyrics for ‘Fum, Fum, Fum’

On December five and twenty,
Fum, fum, fum.
On December five and twenty,
Fum, fum, fum.
For a Blessed Babe was born
Upon this day at break of morn.
In a manger poor and lowly
Lay the Son of God most holy,
Fum, fum, fum.
Holidays the good Lord gave us,
Fum, fum, fum!
Holidays the good Lord gave us,
Fum, fum, fum!
Summer feasting suits us best,
Yet, withal His name be blest.
He who doth our needs remember,
Sent us Christmas in December,
Fum, fum, fum!

Little birds out in the wood,
Sing fum, fum, fum!
Little birds out in the wood,
Sing fum, fum, fum!
All your fledglings on the bough,
O leave them now, O leave them now.
Make a soft and downy nest
So the newborn babe may rest
Sing fum, fum, fum!

Little stars up in the sky,
Sing fum, fum, fum!
Little stars up in the sky,
Sing fum, fum, fum!
See the little Jesus crying,
Don’t you cry, O don’t you cry,
Fill the night with twinkling light.
Oh wondrous stars that shine so bright,
Sing fum, fum, fum!

[Catalan Version]

A vint-i-cinc de desembre
fum, fum, fum (bis)
Ha nascut un minyonet
ros i blanquet, ros i blanquet;
Fill de la Verge Maria,
n’és nat en una establia.
Fum, fum, fum.
Allí dalt de la muntanya
fum, fum, fum (bis)
Si n’hi ha dos pastorets
abrigadets, abrigadets;
amb la pell i la samarra,
menjant ous i botifarra.
Fum, fum, fum.
Qui dirà més gran mentida?
Fum, fum, fum (bis)
Ja en respon el majoral
el gran tabal, el gran tabal;
jo en faré deu mil camades
amb un salt totes plegades.
Fum, fum, fum.
A vint-i-cinc de desembre
fum, fum, fum (bis)
n’és el dia de Nadal,
molt principal, molt principal,
quan n’eixirem de matines,
farem bones escudines.
Fum, fum, fum.
Déu vos do unes santes festes
fum, fum, fum (bis)
amb temps de fred i calor,
i molt millor, i molt millor
fent-ne de Jesús memòria
perquè ens vulgui dalt la glòria.
Fum, fum, fum.

Down By the Station | Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords, Video

Down By the Station (sometimes referred to as Down at the Station) is a popular children’s music standard. It is said to have been written in 1948 by Lee Ricks and Slim Gaillard.  However, there are those who say that the song may have already existed prior to that since it was found in a 1931 copy of Recreation magazine.

The most well-known version of the song was the one performed by American jazz musician Tommy Dorsey, who was considered the bandleader of the big band era and known for being the “Sentimental Gentleman of Swing”. The chorus of Down By The Station seems to be very similar to another popular French-Canadian folk song called Alouette.

It is possible that the song may have been the inspiration behind Edward’s Day Out, which was one of the stories in Reverend Wilbert Awdry’s book The Three Railway Engines. This book started what became the Railway Series. The characters and stories from this set of 42 books became the basis of the widely popular children’s television series Thomas & Friends.

Lyrics for ‘Down By the Station’

Down by the station,
Early in the morning,
See the little puffer bellies,
All in a row.

See the engine driver,
Pull the little handle,
Chug, chug, woo, woo,
Off we go!

(Alternate Lyrics for ‘Down by the Station’)

Down by the station
Early in the morning
See the little pufferbellies
All in a row

See the station master
Turn the little handle
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Down by the station
Early in the morning
See the shiny train cars
All in a row

Waitin’ to get hitched up
And go on their adventure
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Down by the station
Early in the morning
See my favorite engine
Ready to tow

All the other train cars
Will follow on behind him
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Down by the station
Early in the morning
Climb on aboard
And hear the whistle blow

Mr. Conductor
Please take my ticket
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Down by the station
Early in the morning
See the little pufferbellies
All in a row

See the station master
Turn the little handle
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

See the station master
Turn the little handle
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

La Bamba (Valens) | Piano & Guitar Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords

The song La Bamba is one of those songs that, just by hearing the opening line, puts you in a fun and festive mood right away. Popularized by Mexican American rock and roll pioneer Ritchie Valens in 1958, the song was originally a folk song and lullaby in the state of Veracruz in Mexico.

Valens’ version of the song catapulted him to rock and roll stardom and earned him a place as the forefather of the Chicano rock movement. La Bamba also has the distinction of being the only non-English song to be included in the list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine, holding the 354th spot. Many artists have covered the song including Los Lobos, Trini Lopez, Harry Belafonte, and Glen Campbell.

Lyrics for ‘La Bamba’

Para bailar La Bamba
Para bailar La Bamba
Se necessita una poca de gracia

Una poca de gracia
Para mi, para ti, ay arriba, ay arriba
Ay, arriba arriba
Por ti sere, por ti sere, por ti sere

Yo no soy marinero
Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan
Soy capitan, soy capitan

Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba, bam

Por ti sere, por ti sere, por ti sere

Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba
Bamba, bamba

(English translation)

To dance the Bamba,
to dance the Bamba,
one needs a bit of grace.
A bit of grace for me, for you,
now come on, come on,
now come on, come on,
for you I’ll be, for you, I’ll be, for you I’ll be.

I’m not a sailor,
I’m not a sailor, I’m a captain.
I’m a captain, I’m a captain.
Bamba, bamba,
bamba, bamba,
bamba, bamba, bam…

To dance the Bamba,
to dance the Bamba,
one needs a bit of grace.
A bit of grace for me, for you,
now come on, come on.

To dance the Bamba,
to dance the Bamba,

A bit of grace for me, for you,
now come on, come on,
now come on, come on,
for you I’ll be, for you I’ll be, for you I’ll be.

Doctor Foster | Free Easy Piano Sheet Music (Mother Goose)

The nursery rhyme Doctor Foster is part if the Mother Goose collection of children’s songs and has been around since the late 19th century. In 1920, Boyd Smith suggested that the origin of the rhyme may be from the story of King Edward I’s travel to the Gloucester which is the county town in the South West of England. However, a variant of the rhyme in Gamer Gurton’s Garland published in 1810 makes the connection unlikely.

Other explanations point to an incident in Christopher Marlowe’s play Doctor Faustus where the title character ends up being called as Doctor Fauster after he conjured a straw into a horse which changed back to the straw in the middle of crossing the river, causing the rider to get soaked.

Lyrics for ‘Doctor Foster’

Doctor Foster went to Gloucester,
In a shower of rain;
He stepped in a puddle,
Right up to his middle,
And never went there again.

Pick a Bale of Cotton | Free Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords

Pick a Bale of Cotton is an American traditional folk song and spiritual. It began as a work song and has been around for quite sometime before Lead Belly (whose real name was Huddie William Ledbetter) made a record of the song. Lead Belly was an American folk and blues musician known for his strong, distinct vocals and for being a virtuoso on the twelve-string guitar.

The song has been covered by some of the most popular artists in history including Harry Belafonte, Johnny Cash, Lonnie Donegan, The Quarrymen, and The Vipers Skiffle Group (also known simply as The Vipers). In 1975, the Swedish pop group ABBA also included the song in a medley of folk songs along with other traditional folk songs like Midnight Special and On Top of Old Smoky.

Lyrics for ‘Pick a Bale of Cotton’

(Note: The song begins at a decent tempo but the more that it progresses, the more the speed increases. The phrase “me and my baby” will also be replaced with “me and my wife”, “me and my pappy”, “me and my buddy”, “me and my partner”, or “me and my friend” in the verses that follow.)

Jump down turn around,
Pick a bale of cotton,
Jump down turn around,
Pick a bale a day.

Oh, Lordie pick a bale of cotton,
Oh, Lordie pick a bale a day.
Oh, Lordie pick a bale of cotton,
Oh, Lordie pick a bale a day.

Well, me and my baby gonna
Pick a bale of cotton.
Me and my baby gonna
Pick a bale a day.

Oh, Lordie pick a bale of cotton,
Oh, Lordie pick a bale a day.
Oh, Lordie pick a bale of cotton,
Oh, Lordie pick a bale a day.

Hark! the Herald Angels Sing | Free Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, Video

Written by Charles Wesley in 1739, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing was originally intended by Wesley to be a slow and solemn hymn and not the joyful and lively Christmas carol it is nowadays. The modifications made to the song, including the ones by Wesley’s co-worker George Whitefield as well as Felix Mendelssohn who produced the melody used to accompany the lyrics, have turned it into its popular version today.

Lyrics for ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’

Hark! the herald angels sing,
“Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!”
Joyful, all ye nations, rise.
Join the triumph of the skies.
With th’ angelic hosts proclaim
“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King!

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord.
Late in time behold Him come,
off-spring of a virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail, the incarnate deity.
Pleased as man with men to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King!

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace,
Hail, the Sun of Righteousness.
Light and life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in His wings.
Now He lays His Glory by,
Born that man no more may die.
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King!

Come, Desire of nations come,
Fix in us Thy humble home;
Oh, to all Thyself impart,
formed in each believing heart!
Hark! the herald angels sing,
“Glory to the new-born King!
Peach on earch and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!
” Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King!

Adam’s likeness, Lord, efface,
Stamp Thine image in its place:
Second Adam from above,
Reinstate us in Thy love.
Let us Thee, though lost, regain,
Thee, the life, the inner man;
O, to all Thyself impart,
Formed in each believing heart.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King!
