Down By the Station | Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords, Video

Down By the Station (sometimes referred to as Down at the Station) is a popular children’s music standard. It is said to have been written in 1948 by Lee Ricks and Slim Gaillard.  However, there are those who say that the song may have already existed prior to that since it was found in a 1931 copy of Recreation magazine.

The most well-known version of the song was the one performed by American jazz musician Tommy Dorsey, who was considered the bandleader of the big band era and known for being the “Sentimental Gentleman of Swing”. The chorus of Down By The Station seems to be very similar to another popular French-Canadian folk song called Alouette.

It is possible that the song may have been the inspiration behind Edward’s Day Out, which was one of the stories in Reverend Wilbert Awdry’s book The Three Railway Engines. This book started what became the Railway Series. The characters and stories from this set of 42 books became the basis of the widely popular children’s television series Thomas & Friends.

Lyrics for ‘Down By the Station’

Down by the station,
Early in the morning,
See the little puffer bellies,
All in a row.

See the engine driver,
Pull the little handle,
Chug, chug, woo, woo,
Off we go!

(Alternate Lyrics for ‘Down by the Station’)

Down by the station
Early in the morning
See the little pufferbellies
All in a row

See the station master
Turn the little handle
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Down by the station
Early in the morning
See the shiny train cars
All in a row

Waitin’ to get hitched up
And go on their adventure
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Down by the station
Early in the morning
See my favorite engine
Ready to tow

All the other train cars
Will follow on behind him
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Down by the station
Early in the morning
Climb on aboard
And hear the whistle blow

Mr. Conductor
Please take my ticket
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Down by the station
Early in the morning
See the little pufferbellies
All in a row

See the station master
Turn the little handle
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

See the station master
Turn the little handle
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

La Bamba (Valens) | Piano & Guitar Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords

The song La Bamba is one of those songs that, just by hearing the opening line, puts you in a fun and festive mood right away. Popularized by Mexican American rock and roll pioneer Ritchie Valens in 1958, the song was originally a folk song and lullaby in the state of Veracruz in Mexico.

Valens’ version of the song catapulted him to rock and roll stardom and earned him a place as the forefather of the Chicano rock movement. La Bamba also has the distinction of being the only non-English song to be included in the list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine, holding the 354th spot. Many artists have covered the song including Los Lobos, Trini Lopez, Harry Belafonte, and Glen Campbell.

Doctor Foster | Free Easy Piano Sheet Music (Mother Goose)

The nursery rhyme Doctor Foster is part if the Mother Goose collection of children’s songs and has been around since the late 19th century. In 1920, Boyd Smith suggested that the origin of the rhyme may be from the story of King Edward I’s travel to the Gloucester which is the county town in the South West of England. However, a variant of the rhyme in Gamer Gurton’s Garland published in 1810 makes the connection unlikely.

Other explanations point to an incident in Christopher Marlowe’s play Doctor Faustus where the title character ends up being called as Doctor Fauster after he conjured a straw into a horse which changed back to the straw in the middle of crossing the river, causing the rider to get soaked.

Lyrics for ‘Doctor Foster’

Doctor Foster went to Gloucester,
In a shower of rain;
He stepped in a puddle,
Right up to his middle,
And never went there again.

Pick a Bale of Cotton | Free Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords

Pick a Bale of Cotton is an American traditional folk song and spiritual. It began as a work song and has been around for quite sometime before Lead Belly (whose real name was Huddie William Ledbetter) made a record of the song. Lead Belly was an American folk and blues musician known for his strong, distinct vocals and for being a virtuoso on the twelve-string guitar.

The song has been covered by some of the most popular artists in history including Harry Belafonte, Johnny Cash, Lonnie Donegan, The Quarrymen, and The Vipers Skiffle Group (also known simply as The Vipers). In 1975, the Swedish pop group ABBA also included the song in a medley of folk songs along with other traditional folk songs like Midnight Special and On Top of Old Smoky.

Lyrics for ‘Pick a Bale of Cotton’

(Note: The song begins at a decent tempo but the more that it progresses, the more the speed increases. The phrase “me and my baby” will also be replaced with “me and my wife”, “me and my pappy”, “me and my buddy”, “me and my partner”, or “me and my friend” in the verses that follow.)

Jump down turn around,
Pick a bale of cotton,
Jump down turn around,
Pick a bale a day.

Oh, Lordie pick a bale of cotton,
Oh, Lordie pick a bale a day.
Oh, Lordie pick a bale of cotton,
Oh, Lordie pick a bale a day.

Well, me and my baby gonna
Pick a bale of cotton.
Me and my baby gonna
Pick a bale a day.

Oh, Lordie pick a bale of cotton,
Oh, Lordie pick a bale a day.
Oh, Lordie pick a bale of cotton,
Oh, Lordie pick a bale a day.

Hark! the Herald Angels Sing | Free Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, Video

Written by Charles Wesley in 1739, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing was originally intended by Wesley to be a slow and solemn hymn and not the joyful and lively Christmas carol it is nowadays. The modifications made to the song, including the ones by Wesley’s co-worker George Whitefield as well as Felix Mendelssohn who produced the melody used to accompany the lyrics, have turned it into its popular version today.

Lyrics for ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’

Hark! the herald angels sing,
“Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!”
Joyful, all ye nations, rise.
Join the triumph of the skies.
With th’ angelic hosts proclaim
“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King!

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord.
Late in time behold Him come,
off-spring of a virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail, the incarnate deity.
Pleased as man with men to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King!

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace,
Hail, the Sun of Righteousness.
Light and life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in His wings.
Now He lays His Glory by,
Born that man no more may die.
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King!

Come, Desire of nations come,
Fix in us Thy humble home;
Oh, to all Thyself impart,
formed in each believing heart!
Hark! the herald angels sing,
“Glory to the new-born King!
Peach on earch and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!
” Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King!

Adam’s likeness, Lord, efface,
Stamp Thine image in its place:
Second Adam from above,
Reinstate us in Thy love.
Let us Thee, though lost, regain,
Thee, the life, the inner man;
O, to all Thyself impart,
Formed in each believing heart.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King!

Oh My Darling, Clementine (Montrose) | Free Piano Sheet Music & Lyrics

Oh My Darling, Clementine is classified as an American western folk ballad which has been named as one of the Top 100 Western Songs of all time by the Western Writers of America. The hymn is said to be in the trochaic meter which means that the metrical foot consists of a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed one, resulting in a kind of “rolling” rhythm.

The melody was originally attributed by Gerald Brenan to an old ballad from Spain that was popularized during the California Gold Rush by Mexican miners who came into the area. Though there are no clear records of who or when the first English version of the song recorded, it has been noted that the one performed by Bing Crosby was the first to reach Billboard charts.

Lyrics for ‘Oh My Darling, Clementine’

In a cavern, in a canyon,
Excavating for a mine,
Lived a miner forty-niner,
And his daughter, Clementine.
Oh, my darling, oh, my darling,
Oh, my darling Clementine,
You are lost and gone forever,
Dreadful sorry, Clementine.

Light she was and like a fairy,
And her shoes were number nine,
Herring boxes without topses,
Sandals were for Clementine.

Oh, my darling, oh, my darling,
Oh, my darling Clementine,
You are lost and gone forever,
Dreadful sorry, Clementine.

Drove her ducklings to the water,
Every morning just at nine,
Hit her foot against a splinter,
Fell into the foaming brine.

Oh, my darling, oh, my darling,
Oh, my darling Clementine,
You are lost and gone forever,
Dreadful sorry, Clementine.

Ruby lips above the water,
Blowing bubbles soft and fine,
But alas, I was no swimmer,
So I lost my Clementine.

Oh, my darling, oh, my darling,
Oh, my darling Clementine,
You are lost and gone forever,
Dreadful sorry, Clementine.

Then the miner, forty-niner,
Soon began to peak and pine,
Thought he oughta join his daughter,
Now hes with his Clementine.

Oh, my darling, oh, my darling,
Oh, my darling Clementine,
You are lost and gone forever,
Dreadful sorry, Clementine.

There’s a churchyard on the hillside,
Where the flowers grow and twine,
There grow roses, ‘mongst the posies,
Fertilized by Clementine.

Oh, my darling, oh, my darling,
Oh, my darling Clementine,
You are lost and gone forever,
Dreadful sorry, Clementine.

The Grand Old Duke of York | Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, and Video

The Mother Goose children’s nursery rhyme The Grand Old Duke of York is also known as The Noble Duke of York. It is often used as an action song with different variations. The most common actions include having participants do a snappy salute with every mention of the Duke of York, standing up from being seated when the verse mentions “they were up”, sitting down when it says “they were down”, half-crouching on “they were only half-way up”, and flashing ten fingers when it says “ten thousand men”.

As is the case with most nursery rhymes that have been around for a long time, it’s hard to ascertain the origin of these songs since it is passed on only through oral tradition for decades or centuries before somebody is able to put into print. There have been many debates about exactly which Duke of York the song is referring to, but many believe the song to be about Prince Frederick (1763–1827), who was the second son of King George III and who was given the title Duke of York and Albany. During the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars, he served as the Commander-in-Chief in the British Army. He was placed in charge of the Flanders Campaign, a military expedition during 1793–1794 which ended in a crushing defeat at the Battle of Tourcoing.

Lyrics for ‘The Grand Old Duke of York’

(Popular Modern Version)

Oh, The grand old Duke of York,
He had ten thousand men;
He marched them up to the top of the hill,
And he marched them down again.

And when they were up, they were up,
And when they were down, they were down,
And when they were only half-way up,
They were neither up nor down[1]

(Optional Verse)

Oh, a-hunting we will go,
A-hunting we will go,
We’ll catch a fox, and put him in a box,
And then we’ll let him go.
