Row, Row, Row Your Boat” is an English nursery rhyme. It’s also considered an “action” rhyme, as singers often sit opposite of each other, join hands, and pretend to row a boat. The earliest printing of the song is from 1852. The lyrics were very much like the onces we sing today, but the melody was very different. It was first recorded with our modern tune in 1881.

Lyrics

One elephant went out to play
Upon a spider’s web one day.
He had such enormous fun,
He called for another elephant to come… “Oh, ELEPHANT!”

Two elephants…

Three elephants…

Four elephants…

Five elephants…

Five elephants went out to play
Upon a spider’s web one day.
The web went creak, the web went crack.
And all of the elephants went KERSPLAT!

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God is one of Martin Luther’s most popular hymns. The words, a paraphrase of Psalm 46, and melody were written sometime between 1527 and 1529.

A Mighty Fortress is Our God | Steve Green

Lyrics
A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper he amid the flood
of mortal ills prevaling.
For still our ancient foe
doth seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right man on our side,
the man of God’s own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth, his name,
from age to age the same,
and he must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God hath willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The Prince of Darkness grim,
we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure,
for lo, his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers,
no thanks to them, abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours,
thru him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also;
the body they may kill;
God’s truth abideth still;
his kingdom is forever.

History

She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain, sometimes refered to as Coming ‘Round the Mountain, is an American folk song. The song was first printed in Carl Sandburg’s, The American Songbag (1927), though it is believed to have dated from the late 1800s.

Lyrics

She’ll be coming round the mountain when she comes,
She’ll be coming round the mountain when she comes,
She’ll be coming round the mountain,
She’ll be coming round the mountain,
She’ll be coming round the mountain when she comes.

She’ll be driving six white horses when she comes,
She’ll be driving six white horses when she comes,
She’ll be driving six white horses,
She’ll be driving six white horses,
She’ll be driving six white horses when she comes.

Oh, we’ll all go out to meet her when she comes,
Oh, we’ll all go out to meet her when she comes,
Oh, we’ll all go out to meet her,
We’ll all go out to meet her,
We’ll all go out to meet her when she comes.

We’ll be havin’ chicken and dumplings when she comes,
We’ll be havin’ chicken and dumplings when she comes,
We’ll be havin’ chicken and dumplings,
We’ll be havin’ chicken and dumplings,
We’ll be havin’ chicken and dumplings when she comes.

The Old Gray Mare is a classic folk song that has more recently been adopted into the standard collection of American children’s songs.  The text refers to a horse, though the lyrics may also be referring to a woman that is well past her prime.

Lyrics
Oh, the old gray mare, she ain’t what she used to be,
Ain’t what she used to be, ain’t what she used to be.
The old gray mare, she ain’t what she used to be,
Many long years ago.

Many long years ago, many long years ago.

The old gray mare, she ain’t what she used to be,
Many long years ago.

The old gray mare, she kicked on the whiffletree,
Kicked on the whiffletree, kicked on the whiffletree
The old gray mare, she kicked on the whiffletree
Many long years ago.

Many long years ago, many long years ago,

The old gray mare, she kicked on the whiffletree
Many long years ago.

History
“Take Me Out to the Ball Game” is a Tin Pan Alley song from 1908. It was written by Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer, neither of which had attended a game prior to composing the tune.

Lyrics
Nelly Kelly loved baseball games,
Knew the players, knew all their names.
You could see her there ev’ry day,
Shout “Hurray”
When they’d play.
Her boyfriend by the name of Joe
Said, “To Coney Isle, dear, let’s go”,
Then Nelly started to fret and pout,
And to him, I heard her shout:

Chorus
Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd;
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks,
I don’t care if I never get back.
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don’t win, it’s a shame.
For it’s one, two, three strikes, you’re out,
At the old ball game.

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot a traditional American spiritual. It was written by Wallis Willis around 1862. It has become such a favorite, that it has been included in the list of Songs of the Century.

Lyrics
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home.

I look’d over Jordan
An’ what did I see,
Coming for to carry me home,
A band of angels comin’ after me,
Coming for to carry me home.

Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home.

If you get there before I do,
Coming for to carry me home,
Tell all my friends I’m comin’ there too
Coming for to carry me home.

Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home.

Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home,
Swing low, sweet chariot,
Coming for to carry me home.
