The Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics were written by lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key. He had just witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships amidst the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. His inspiration came from seeing the large American flag flying above the fort.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
