Wabash Cannonball | Beginner Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords

The American folk song popularly known as Wabash Cannonball was originally written as The Great Rock Island Route on the earliest sheet music found for the song which was composed by J.A. Roff, to whom the song has been historically credited. The song is considered to be the oldest in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

Over the years, there have been many versions of the song, but they all retain more or less the same chorus. The most famous renditions were the ones from Roy Acuff, Bing Crosby, and Johnny Cash.

Lyrics for ‘Wabash Cannonball’

From the great Atlantic Ocean,
To the wide Pacific shore,
From sunny California,
To ice-bound Labrador.
She’s mighty tall and handsome,
She’s loved by one and all,
She’s the hobo’s ‘commodation,
The Wabash Cannonball.
Listen to the jingle,
The rumble and the roar,
As she glides along the woodlands,
Through hills and by the shore.
Hear the mighty rush of the engine,
Hear those lonesome hobos squall,
While trav’ling through the jungle,
On the Wabash Cannonball.

Our eastern states are dandy,
So the people always say,
From New York to St. Louis,
And Chicago by the way.
Through the hills of Minnesota,
Where the rippling waters fall,
No chances can be taken,
On the Wabash Cannonball.

Listen to the jingle,
The rumble and the roar,
As she glides along the woodlands,
Through hills and by the shore.
Hear the mighty rush of the engine,
Hear those lonesome hobos squall,
While trav’ling through the jungle,
On the Wabash Cannonball.

Now here’s to Daddy Claxton,
May his name forever stand,
He’ll always be remembered,
In the courts throughout the land.
His earthly race is over,
And the curtain round him falls,
Carryin’ him home to victory,
On the Wabash Cannonball.

Jack Be Nimble| Free Beginner Guitar Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords, Video

Jack Be Nimble is a famous English kids’ song which is often used as a skipping rhyme. This traditional nursery song has been popular since 1815 when it was published in an old manuscript. It was one of the kids’ songs to complete James Orchard Halliwell’s English Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales collection which was published in the mid-nineteenth century.

Jack Be Nimble has always been an interesting nursery song, not only for kids but also for adults because of its historical origin. The song is believed to be inspired by an English pirate named Black Jack Smatt. Black Jack lived in Jamaica and was a very quick and smart pirate. He was one of the most popular pirates in the Caribbean because of his ability to always escape from authorities. Apparently, the Jack in the song portrays Black Jack, the pirate who was always “nimble.”

Another way to interpret the meaning of the song is in terms of the English tradition associated with it called ‘candle leaping’. Candle leaping was a traditional sport in England which was done by jumping over a candlestick. The player should jump over the candlestick without extinguishing or smothering the flame. It was said to bring good luck and success to the player’s life. In the song, there’s a line that says, “Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack jump over the candlestick.” This line suggests that one has to be nimble like Jack to achieve good luck and success in life.

While the story of Black Jack and the candle leaping tradition are convincing origins of “Jack Be Nimble,” some people associate it to Yellow Fever, an acute viral hemorrhagic disease also known as Yellow Jack. During the time where this disease was common, its treatment was mostly based on superstition and presumptions. To get rid of the fever, which is one of the symptoms of the disease; one should light a fire in the room of the ill person. The lit candle placed close to the person’s bed was believed to draw the infection out. People believe that “Jack” came from the name “Yellow Jack” and the song was the Yellow Fever itself. It suggests that the fever should jump over the candle or the fire to make the ill person feel better and to completely ward off the disease.

Jack Be Nimble is rich in cultural and historical origins so it is more than just a kids’ song for English people.

Lyrics for ‘Jack Be Nimble’

Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack jump over the candlestick
Jack be nimble, Jack be spry
Jack jump over the apple pie
Jack be nimble, Jack jump high!
Jack fly up into the sky

Skipping skipping like a kite
Bouncing bouncing with delight
Every leap is leaping right

Jack is happy, Jack is spry
Jack be nimble, Jack jump high!
Jack fly up into the sky

Skipping skipping like a kite
Jack jump over the apple pie
Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jump jump Jack jump!
Jack is happy, Jack is spry
Every leap is leaping right
Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jump!

Jack be nimble, Jack be light
Way way up into the sky
Tumbles up and touches down
Landing like a butterfly
Jack be nimble, Jack jump high!

Jack fly up into the sky
Jump jump Jack jump!

Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack jump over the candlestick
Jack be nimble, Jack be spry
Jack jump over the apple pie
Jack be nimble, Jack jump high!
Jack fly up into the sky

Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack be nimble, Jack be quick (3x)

Coventry Carol | Free Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords, Video

The Coventry Carol is also often called the Lullay Song. It originated in the 16th century from a popular town in England called Coventry (hence the name). Around that time, it was commonly part of the tradition to perform the song in a mystery play called The Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors.

Although it has been widely known for several centuries as a Christmas song which is usually played during the holidays, the song itself depicts an entirely different story. In The Pageant of the Shearman and Tailors, a scene describes an event in the Bible regarding the experience of families during a difficult time and the song is sung by mothers as a lullaby to comfort their children.

The original author of the carol is unknown. As in the old days, this was only passed on orally and not written down. It wasn’t until Robert Croo had done so in a manuscript many years later that a written copy came into existence. Ever since then, it continued to be played in pageants or plays and the lyrics were gradually modernized. It was eventually brought to a wider audience after the song was featured in the BBC’s Empire Broadcast during Christmas in 1940.

Lyrics for ‘Coventry Carol’

[Original Version]

Lully, lulla, thow littell tine child,
By by, lully, lullay
Thow littell tyne child,
By by, lully, lullay!
O sisters too, how may we do
For to preserve this day
This pore yongling for whom we do singe
By by, lully, lullay?
Herod, the king, in his raging,
Chargid he hath this day
His men of might in his owne sight
All yonge children to slay,—
That wo is me, pore child, for thee,
And ever morne and may
For thi parting nether say nor singe,
By by, lully, lullay.

[Modernized Version]

Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child,
Bye bye, lully, lullay.
Thou little tiny child,
Bye bye, lully, lullay.
O sisters too, how may we do
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling for whom we sing,
“Bye bye, lully, lullay”?
Herod the king, in his raging,
Chargèd he hath this day
His men of might in his own sight
All young children to slay.
That woe is me, poor child, for thee
And ever mourn and may
For thy parting neither say nor sing,
“Bye bye, lully, lullay.”

Fum, Fum, Fum (Christmas Song) | Piano Sheet Music & Guitar Chords

Fum, Fum, Fum was originally a Catalan/Catalonian Christmas Carol written sometime between 1501-1700. The rhythm is based on a courtly dance called the Sardana which came from the Provence and Catalonia area.

The literal translation of the word “fum” means “smoke” which could refer to the rising smoke from chimneys. However, the word has a range of other meanings and uses. It is also sometimes used to mean “to play the fiddle”. Some say the title could just be an onomatopoeic imitation of the strum of a guitar, the sound of a drum, or the noise of a rocking cradle.

The song was converted (though not translated word for word) into the English language in 1953 by Robert Shaw and Alice Parker. This became the popular version of the song in most English-speaking countries, especially in the US.

Lyrics for ‘Fum, Fum, Fum’

On December five and twenty,
Fum, fum, fum.
On December five and twenty,
Fum, fum, fum.
For a Blessed Babe was born
Upon this day at break of morn.
In a manger poor and lowly
Lay the Son of God most holy,
Fum, fum, fum.
Holidays the good Lord gave us,
Fum, fum, fum!
Holidays the good Lord gave us,
Fum, fum, fum!
Summer feasting suits us best,
Yet, withal His name be blest.
He who doth our needs remember,
Sent us Christmas in December,
Fum, fum, fum!

Little birds out in the wood,
Sing fum, fum, fum!
Little birds out in the wood,
Sing fum, fum, fum!
All your fledglings on the bough,
O leave them now, O leave them now.
Make a soft and downy nest
So the newborn babe may rest
Sing fum, fum, fum!

Little stars up in the sky,
Sing fum, fum, fum!
Little stars up in the sky,
Sing fum, fum, fum!
See the little Jesus crying,
Don’t you cry, O don’t you cry,
Fill the night with twinkling light.
Oh wondrous stars that shine so bright,
Sing fum, fum, fum!

[Catalan Version]

A vint-i-cinc de desembre
fum, fum, fum (bis)
Ha nascut un minyonet
ros i blanquet, ros i blanquet;
Fill de la Verge Maria,
n’és nat en una establia.
Fum, fum, fum.
Allí dalt de la muntanya
fum, fum, fum (bis)
Si n’hi ha dos pastorets
abrigadets, abrigadets;
amb la pell i la samarra,
menjant ous i botifarra.
Fum, fum, fum.
Qui dirà més gran mentida?
Fum, fum, fum (bis)
Ja en respon el majoral
el gran tabal, el gran tabal;
jo en faré deu mil camades
amb un salt totes plegades.
Fum, fum, fum.
A vint-i-cinc de desembre
fum, fum, fum (bis)
n’és el dia de Nadal,
molt principal, molt principal,
quan n’eixirem de matines,
farem bones escudines.
Fum, fum, fum.
Déu vos do unes santes festes
fum, fum, fum (bis)
amb temps de fred i calor,
i molt millor, i molt millor
fent-ne de Jesús memòria
perquè ens vulgui dalt la glòria.
Fum, fum, fum.

Sweetly Sings the Donkey | Free Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, and Video

Sweetly Sings the Donkey is a single-verse song that is usually sung as a round, which is sometimes referred to as a perpetual/infinite canon. This means that at the unison, at least 3 voices sing the exact same melody and may continue singing it in an infinite loop. However, each voice begins at a different time so that the different voices coincide in different parts of the melody with the harmony still fitting together perfectly.

The origin of the song is largely unknown, but it is believed to come from England. Some variations on the lyrics of the silly song have included other animals such as magpies, dodos, and dolphins. The song is also discussed in one chapter of Harper Lee’s best-selling classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird. In the story, singing the song is frowned upon by state-appointed teachers because of how it is closely associated with the upbringing of rural children.

Lyrics for ‘Sweetly Sings the Donkey’

Sweetly sings the donkey
At the break of day.
If you do not feed him
This is what he’ll say,
“Hee Haw, Hee Haw.
Hee Haw, Hee Haw.”

Down By the Station | Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords, Video

Down By the Station (sometimes referred to as Down at the Station) is a popular children’s music standard. It is said to have been written in 1948 by Lee Ricks and Slim Gaillard.  However, there are those who say that the song may have already existed prior to that since it was found in a 1931 copy of Recreation magazine.

The most well-known version of the song was the one performed by American jazz musician Tommy Dorsey, who was considered the bandleader of the big band era and known for being the “Sentimental Gentleman of Swing”. The chorus of Down By The Station seems to be very similar to another popular French-Canadian folk song called Alouette.

It is possible that the song may have been the inspiration behind Edward’s Day Out, which was one of the stories in Reverend Wilbert Awdry’s book The Three Railway Engines. This book started what became the Railway Series. The characters and stories from this set of 42 books became the basis of the widely popular children’s television series Thomas & Friends.

Lyrics for ‘Down By the Station’

Down by the station,
Early in the morning,
See the little puffer bellies,
All in a row.

See the engine driver,
Pull the little handle,
Chug, chug, woo, woo,
Off we go!

(Alternate Lyrics for ‘Down by the Station’)

Down by the station
Early in the morning
See the little pufferbellies
All in a row

See the station master
Turn the little handle
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Down by the station
Early in the morning
See the shiny train cars
All in a row

Waitin’ to get hitched up
And go on their adventure
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Down by the station
Early in the morning
See my favorite engine
Ready to tow

All the other train cars
Will follow on behind him
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Down by the station
Early in the morning
Climb on aboard
And hear the whistle blow

Mr. Conductor
Please take my ticket
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Down by the station
Early in the morning
See the little pufferbellies
All in a row

See the station master
Turn the little handle
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

See the station master
Turn the little handle
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go
Chug chug puff puff
Off they go

Polly Wolly Doodle | Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords, Video

The first ever performance of Polly Wolly Doodle was by Daniel Emmett’s Virginia Minstrels in the early 1840s at New York’s Bowery Amphitheatre. It has since become a popular children’s song and nursery rhyme. Its first publication was in 1880 as part of a Harvard student songbook.

Several versions and covers have been made of the song. Some of the more notables ones are those by Shirley Temple in the film The Littlest Rebel (1935), Julie Andrews in the opening sequence for S.O.B (1981), Alvin and the Chipmunks as part of their album The Chipmunk Songbook (1962), and Bing Crosby in a medley in his album 101 Gang Songs (1961).

Lyrics for ‘Polly Wolly Doodle’

Oh, I went down South for to see my Sal,
Singing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.
My Sal, she is a spunky gal,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.

Fare thee well, fare thee well,
Fare thee well my fairy Fay.
For I’m off to Lou’siana for to see my Susyanna,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.

Oh, my Sal, she is a maiden fair,
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day.
With curly eyes and laughing hair,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.

Fare thee well, fare thee well,
fare thee well my fairy Fay.
for I’m off to Lou’siana for to see my Susyanna,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.

Oh I like watermelon and I have for years,
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day.
I eat watermelon because it gets upon my ears,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.

Fare thee well, fare thee well,
Fare thee well my fairy Fay.
For I’m off to Lou’siana for to see my Susyanna,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.

Oh, a grasshopper sittin’ on a railroad track,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.
A pickin’ his teeth with a carpet tack,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.

Fare thee well, fare thee well,
Fare thee well my fairy Fay.
I’m going to Lou’siana for to see my Susyanna,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.

Behind the barn, down on my knees,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.
I thought I heard a chicken sneeze,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.

Oh he sneezed so hard with the whooping cough,
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day.
He sneezed his head and his tail right off,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.

Fare thee well, fare thee well,
Fare thee well my fairy Fay.
For I’m off to Lou’siana for to see my Susyanna,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle,
Sing Polly Wolly Doodle all the day.

La Bamba (Valens) | Piano & Guitar Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords

The song La Bamba is one of those songs that, just by hearing the opening line, puts you in a fun and festive mood right away. Popularized by Mexican American rock and roll pioneer Ritchie Valens in 1958, the song was originally a folk song and lullaby in the state of Veracruz in Mexico.

Valens’ version of the song catapulted him to rock and roll stardom and earned him a place as the forefather of the Chicano rock movement. La Bamba also has the distinction of being the only non-English song to be included in the list of 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine, holding the 354th spot. Many artists have covered the song including Los Lobos, Trini Lopez, Harry Belafonte, and Glen Campbell.

Doctor Foster | Free Easy Piano Sheet Music (Mother Goose)

The nursery rhyme Doctor Foster is part if the Mother Goose collection of children’s songs and has been around since the late 19th century. In 1920, Boyd Smith suggested that the origin of the rhyme may be from the story of King Edward I’s travel to the Gloucester which is the county town in the South West of England. However, a variant of the rhyme in Gamer Gurton’s Garland published in 1810 makes the connection unlikely.

Other explanations point to an incident in Christopher Marlowe’s play Doctor Faustus where the title character ends up being called as Doctor Fauster after he conjured a straw into a horse which changed back to the straw in the middle of crossing the river, causing the rider to get soaked.

Lyrics for ‘Doctor Foster’

Doctor Foster went to Gloucester,
In a shower of rain;
He stepped in a puddle,
Right up to his middle,
And never went there again.

Pick a Bale of Cotton | Free Piano Sheet Music, Lyrics, Guitar Chords

Pick a Bale of Cotton is an American traditional folk song and spiritual. It began as a work song and has been around for quite sometime before Lead Belly (whose real name was Huddie William Ledbetter) made a record of the song. Lead Belly was an American folk and blues musician known for his strong, distinct vocals and for being a virtuoso on the twelve-string guitar.

The song has been covered by some of the most popular artists in history including Harry Belafonte, Johnny Cash, Lonnie Donegan, The Quarrymen, and The Vipers Skiffle Group (also known simply as The Vipers). In 1975, the Swedish pop group ABBA also included the song in a medley of folk songs along with other traditional folk songs like Midnight Special and On Top of Old Smoky.

Lyrics for ‘Pick a Bale of Cotton’

(Note: The song begins at a decent tempo but the more that it progresses, the more the speed increases. The phrase “me and my baby” will also be replaced with “me and my wife”, “me and my pappy”, “me and my buddy”, “me and my partner”, or “me and my friend” in the verses that follow.)

Jump down turn around,
Pick a bale of cotton,
Jump down turn around,
Pick a bale a day.

Oh, Lordie pick a bale of cotton,
Oh, Lordie pick a bale a day.
Oh, Lordie pick a bale of cotton,
Oh, Lordie pick a bale a day.

Well, me and my baby gonna
Pick a bale of cotton.
Me and my baby gonna
Pick a bale a day.

Oh, Lordie pick a bale of cotton,
Oh, Lordie pick a bale a day.
Oh, Lordie pick a bale of cotton,
Oh, Lordie pick a bale a day.
